Need
For each of the first four teams of Shamashim, the same challenge continued to come up; how to manage the day to day running of Altshul and all its programs in addition to bigger picture, often complex issues that have naturally developed with our rapid growth (such as space, kids, money). For several years, each team struggled with how to approach these decisions and while they were continually managed, the underlying matter was not resolved, but was passed on to the next incarnation of Shamashim.
In researching the decision making structures of other independent minyanim, we discovered two common models: extended (multi-year) Shamash terms or an additional Steering Committee. As our Shamashim put in a great deal of work for the year they are on the team, extending the terms did not seem like a realistic option for our community.
Formation
All former Shamashim who are currently involved in Altshul were invited into the process to create the structure of the Committee. From this group, seven people agreed to participate in the Committee for the first 2-3 year term.
Steering Committee’s Mission
The mission of the Steering Committee is to ensure that the mission and values of Altshul are realized in policy decisions, to serve as a store of institutional memory, and to offer guidance to Shamashim as needed.
Process
The goal of our decision making process is to make responsible decisions based on Altshul’s mission, history, community and relationships. It will first include a conversation with the current team of Shamashim. This will be followed by consultation with the Altshul community through meetings, surveys, or e-mail. We will then research the approaches of other independent minyanim, and finally, if applicable, explore the halakhic aspects of the decision.
